Using influence to grow your audience online

Posted on 6/21/17 1:28 PM

When launching a Facebook ad you don’t want to be placed next to “fake news” or insensitive content – it makes you look bad in the eyes of certain viewers. Facebook is now giving you insight into where your ad will appear and what types of content will be surrounding it. You can see this information before launching your ad and you can also blacklist certain publishers who are known for putting out questionable content. This update is Facebook’s way of trying to give marketers more control of their ads before they go live.

Why this matters...

Whether you like it or not, your organization is competing against social ad content of many other nonprofits. Don’t eliminate yourself from the running by not being careful and ensuring that your Facebook ad does not appear next to inappropriate content. Utilize all the tools Facebook is supplying you with and create content that will engage potential both existing and prospective donors while also keeping your nonprofit on a high pedestal. Want to get started with Facebook ads but you’re unsure where to start? That’s what we’re here for!

Blogging is important, but standing out from the pack isn’t easy. HubSpot ran their own influencer marketing experiment to test whether that could dramatically increase views and broaden their audience. One of the major findings was that the quality of the content was the driving factor, not the quantity – as he had predicted before the experiment began. Don’t spend time trying to get 10 “good” influencers, get one great influencer!

Why this matters...

If your organization is looking to grow your constituent base then influencer marketing could be the key to success. But don’t fall for the beginner mistake and think that getting a multitude of influencers is the goal; you’re better off finding a few major influencers that create(s) something amazing while shedding a positive light on your mission. But before you even think about influencer marketing, you have to first have a healthy blog filled with frequently published stories. Don’t have a great blog yet? That should be your first step!

Last week Twitter announced that over the next few weeks they will be making the app much simpler to use and easier to navigate. Also, when clicking a link in a post it will open in the app so you don’t have to juggle multiple apps at the same time — which is what everyone was doing anyway, but thanks, Twitter! If you haven’t seen the latest design yet, here it is.

Why this matters...

The overall UX design of Twitter most likely doesn’t fall under your umbrella of things to care deeply about, however, the feature that opens links inside the app is a big deal. One of the preexisting problems was that users didn’t click Twitter links because they were forced to leave the app. This update could lead to a spike in Twitter clicks and make the platform much more valuable to your organization when trying to reach constituents with your content.
