What you don't know about email, P2P and Instagram

WHAT'S BLACK OR GRAY AND NOT READ ALL OVER?

HANDPICKED BY TONY FRAGA

Could be your emails. But don't worry...there is still tremendous ROI when it comes to email marketing, although it is getting harder and harder to do well. As top email service providers like Gmail and Outlook become pickier about which emails they’ll let reach the inbox — versus folders like “promos,” “clutter,” and “junk” — it is more important than ever to make sure you're following best practices and avoiding spamy techniques. Here are 13 things to start, stop, and keep doing with your email marketing in 2017 from our friends at HubSpot.

Why this matters...

If you have email lists with low rates of engagement activity, stop sending to them. Every time you send to a list with low open and engagement rates, it hurts your domain reputation and your chances of connecting with constituents - even if they are active donors who have opted into your communications. It's better to clean up your lists and establish a better strategy for all of your email communications rather than keep "batching and blasting" - even if that might mean less engagement in the short run.

WHY THIS IS YOUR YEAR FOR PEER-TO-PEER:

HANDPICKED BY ZACH BUSEKRUS

It's a new year, and that means there's no excuse if you let the entire year go by without launching a successful peer-to-peer fundraising campaign. And thanks to folks at Crowdfund Insider, you don't have to do it with your fingers crossed. The recently shared 5 P2P Fundraising Lessons from 2016, which include that engaging content and (big surprise) social media are extremely critical for a successful P2P campaign.

Why this matters...

You can't just launch a P2P fundraising campaign and sit back and see if it works. You have to actually engage people actively throughout the campaign and treat it like an on-going event that you are providing information, updates, and promotions for every day. If you want great results from P2P, you have to be willing to put in the effort!

DON'T KNOW WHAT YOUR NONPROFIT SHOULD DO WITH INSTAGRAM (OR DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT IT IS)? HERE'S SOME HELP:

HANDPICKED BY ERIN RUSSELL

The wonderful folks at Content Marketing Institute decided to share An Inside Look at CMI's Instagram Posting Strategy and it includes their most successful posts from 2016. They got the most traction (defined by most "likes") by sharing posts about their major events, behind the scenes content, user-generated content, and powerful quotes.

Why this matters...

Don't just focus all your social efforts on Facebook alone. Instagram is one of the fastest-growing social networks, especially among millennials and the generation behind them. Your nonprofit needs to have a plan to take advantage of this visually-appealing social platform, and it starts by getting you staff to start using the cameras on their smartphones. Get everyone snapping great photos of live events, advocate activities, and especially compelling stories showing where your mission intersects with real people - then use this content to develop a strategy for Instragram.
