Forget your significant other, you want Google to love you

FLOWERS AND CHOCOLATES MAY CUT IT FOR YOU, BUT GOOGLE IS GOING TO NEED A LITTLE MORE: You want Google to love you, but how do you force it to? This might come as a surprise but you have much more power than you may think. Here’s How to Create Pillar Content Google Will Love – and also have to reward you for, if it’s done well. Forcing relationships to work never seemed so easy, until now!

Why you should care: There are many ways to attract people to your content, but there’s really only one effective way to do it that’s also free – you guessed it, organic search. That doesn’t mean it’s easy by any means, quite the opposite actually, but it’s worth the hard work as you continue to see organic traffic grow year over year and realize you aren’t spending a dime for it.

“OMG, I’M DELETING FACEBOOK. THEY DON’T RESPECT OUR PRIVACY!": Haha, no you’re not, who are you kidding. As a matter of fact, since this whole mess started Facebook has added 70 million users. Oh, and they’ve increased basically every financial component known to man over that time. What does this all mean? Is Facebook so powerful that literally nothing can slow them down? Will Zuckerberg be our next President?

Why you should care: You laugh at those questions, but look at the last year and tell us they’re impossible – you can’t ;). Social media is a powerhouse that really isn’t going anywhere and at the moment Facebook is the owner of that house. It will shift eventually, but don’t let news like GDPR and the CONSENT Act scare you away from using Facebook as student recruitment tool because they’re still there, and will be for years to come.

HOW TO STOP WRITING THE AGE-OLD HOW TO: Be a storyteller, not an information dump. If your subscribers are constantly getting the same old “Here’s how to do X” post, they’re going to get bored and ultimately it just makes you look bad. Give them something refreshing, keep mixing it up, but always be telling a story that has value to them. Creativity is a beautiful gift, start using it to generate catchy titles and in-depth stories that readers will love.

Why you should care: This is especially true for prospective students. If you are constantly just dumping information on them they’re going to get overwhelmed and/or disengaged. Student testimonials are a great way to provide info without coming off as sales-y or unoriginal. All great stories have four things: reliability, novelty, tension, and fluency. What do you have?
