The Minute: Snowed in (01/25/2016)

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU SEE A DRONE-LIKE BIRD FLYING OVER YOUR CAMPUS: Look again. Because it’s not a bird. That’s right, a few campuses have already started using drones to offer virtual tours (like this one). With a 360-degree view of dorms, classrooms, the library, dining halls, etc, students will be able to visit campus without actually travelling there. Talk about premium content.

Why you should care: Campus virtual reality tours are expected to become increasingly more popular. Oculus, HTC, and Sony plan to release VR headsets later this year. By jumping on this bandwagon early, your institution could offer a cutting-edge and convenient way for students to experience the aesthetic of your campus. Read more here.

WHAT WE CAN ALL LEARN FROM DONALD TRUMP — REGARDLESS OF OUR FEELINGS TOWARD HIM: Marketing skills. Like it or not, Donald Trump is running for president. Yes, it’s happening. And despite Trump’s controversial views, a recent article by Social Media Today describes Trump as a wildly successful marketer, emphasizing his ability to recognize, target and market to a specific audience through self-promotion and authenticity.

Why you should care: Not all prospective students are going to be 22-year-olds right out of college; many interested individuals may have established careers and families or may be contemplating career redirection. Since your audience is so varied, the content (blogs, newsletters, videos, infographics) that your institution distributes should be multifaceted in order to educate and interest prospective students with diverse needs.

HOW TO FEEL WHEN YOU HEAR THE RELEASE OF STAR WARS EPISODE VIII IS BEING DELAYED 7 MONTHS: Lied to. The Association of National Advertisers (ANA) said that in 2015 advertisers found that between 3% to 37% of their ad impressions were created by bots compared to the prior study where the bot traffic ranged from 2% to 22%. Despite numerous warnings that the online advertising business is rife with fraud, marketers continue to blindly waste billions of dollars on buying online ads that real people never actually see.

Why you should care: Sometimes we feel like a broken record, but enrollment marketers need to understand that spending money on traditional digital ads is a waste of your marketing budget. Ad-blocking software is a very real threat to your digital marketing strategies and it’s time we all understood the severity of this trend. Now, more so than ever before, schools need to seriously consider adopting inbound marketing strategies if they want to see real ROI from their marketing efforts in the next couple of years.
